Monty’s Shadow (WV, 1998)

Meet Shadow

Monty’s Shadow is a West Virginia-bred mare foaled in 1998. Although she spent time breezing on the track, she never officially raced. When she came into our care, Shadow was in critical condition with a body score of 1. Our team provided round-the-clock support until she was strong enough to undergo surgery at Michigan State University (MSU).

At MSU, Shadow had a mass removed from her eyelid and quickly became a staff favorite thanks to her gentle spirit. Today, she enjoys a peaceful retirement at the sanctuary, where she thrives on her daily routine—especially her much-loved mash meals.

Table for Three (KY, 1999)

Meet Trio

Trio is a Kentucky-bred gelding foaled in 1999. Over the course of his racing career, he made an impressive 72 starts before retiring from the track. Following his time on the racetrack, Trio spent more than a decade delighting visitors as a beloved resident of the Detroit Zoo.

In 2023, he transitioned from being a zoo favorite to enjoying a well-deserved retirement at the sanctuary. Trio is full of personality, with a spirited presence that endears him to everyone he meets. One of his greatest joys is his daily routine—especially his three servings of mash each day, which he relishes with enthusiasm

Lost on Champagne (KY, 2004)

Meet Champagne

Lost on Champagne is a Kentucky-bred mare foaled in 2004. She raced only 10 times before retiring from the track. After her brief racing career, Champagne went on to serve as a broodmare, though much of her life’s journey remains a mystery.

In 2024, at the age of 20, Champagne found herself in a difficult situation. We welcomed her into our care and provided the medical attention she needed to regain her health and comfort. Despite being blind, Champagne navigates her surroundings with remarkable ease, relying on the companionship of her pasture buddies.

Today, she enjoys a safe and peaceful retirement, embodying resilience and grace.

Crafty Tigress (OH, 2007)

Crafty Tigress is an Ohio-bred mare foaled in 2007. Over the course of her racing career, she made 54 starts, earning more than $100,000 on the track. Following her retirement from racing, she embarked on a second career as a successful broodmare, contributing to the sport in a new way.

Her connections later chose to retire her to the sanctuary, where she now enjoys a well-deserved life of comfort and care. Crafty’s story is especially meaningful, as her owner Brian also serves as an active director on the sanctuary’s board, ensuring her continued wellbeing and supporting the mission to provide safe retirement for horses like her.
